Olympians are able to use CBD to manage a number of health related issues as they prepare for the upcoming winter Olympics in South Korea.
World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said in a Sept. 29 statement “Cannabidiol is no longer prohibited,” warning, however, that THC, the chemical compound in cannabis, (that can contribute to euphoric psychoactive effects) remains banned.
Isolating CBD specifically eliminates the euphoric “high” associated with marijuana use. CBD, which the Food and Drug Administration solicited public comment on as it prepares to recommend to the World Health Organization whether to put restrictions on it.
“Cannabidiol extracted from cannabis plants may contain varying concentrations of THC,” WADA said, urging athletes to take precautions before using CBD products, as many come from marijuana, not just hemp and high uses could result in a false positive. Use of marijuana is still banned and positive tests can result in long suspensions.
The new list will go into effect Jan. 1.
